When it is not given
We follow a written clinical protocol. We do not give this drip during pregnancy (or possible pregnancy) or breastfeeding, to anyone under 18, to people with diabetes or active cancer, or to people with severe heart failure, chest pain or unstable coronary disease, moderate or severe chronic kidney disease, moderate or severe liver disease, a fever of 38.5 °C (101.3 °F) or more, a clotting disorder, an allergy to a component or a history of severe allergic reaction, or a severely weakened immune system, nor within 6 hours of alcohol or other substances. Over 65, or after another drip in the last 14 days, only on a doctor’s decision. That is why the health form is required: if anything makes the session unsafe, we tell you beforehand and the session does not go ahead, even if it is already booked.
Because it contains vitamin C, it is also not given to anyone with G6PD deficiency, excess oxalate or calcium in the urine, or recurrent kidney stones. If you have blood tests in the following hours, say that you had the drip: vitamin C can affect some results.
Because it contains magnesium, it is also not given to anyone with heart block or damage to the heart muscle, or to anyone with myasthenia gravis. Do not drive for the next 4 to 6 hours after this drip.
It is also not given to athletes subject to anti-doping testing: the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Prohibited List bans intravenous infusions of more than 100 mL in 12 hours, unless you have a therapeutic use exemption.
We do not give this drip, and we tell you to see a doctor or go to the emergency department, if after a long race you have nausea, a headache, confusion or weight gain (it may be low sodium, which fluids make worse), severe muscle pain, weakness or dark urine, or hot, dry skin, a high temperature or confusion after exertion.
